  3.               WE WERE NOT MEANT                RGAaPoet@aol.com

  5.     We were not meant to be the dogs of Earth,
  6.     Repressing promised joy, and chilling mirth--
  7.     So why do we appear much lesser than
  8.     The dogs which grovel, still, in awe of man?
  9.  
  10.     We were not meant to be the lesser breed,
  11.     Showing both grace, and virtue, in sore need;
  12.     So why do those with four--or even tails--
  13.     Exceed the worth of man, whose merit fails?
  14.  
  15.     We were not meant to be deprived of sight,
  16.     Whose eyes can fathom day, and conquer night!
  17.     Then why are we so blind to mankind's woe--
  18.     By colours blinded--stumbling as we go?
  19.  
  20.     We were not meant to sell our souls for gold,
  21.     In constant quest of youth, yet growing old.
  22.     Why do we kill for naught, in craven greed--
  23.     Invalidate our lives--in word, and deed....
  24.  
  25.     We were not meant to magnify despair,
  26.     Or lose our souls for assets we can share--
  27.     If you, with gilded trays, would share your feasts,
  28.     How could you be beneath the lesser beasts?
